BOSTON — Boston officials hope a possible hotel expansion plan will make the city a top convention destination.

A state panel is reviewing a proposal for a new 1,000 room hotel next to the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center in south Boston.

The hotel would require $200 million dollars in public funds to complete.

Officials say the hotel is part of a plan to bring more conventions to Boston.

“It’s a generator of revenue for Boston,” Mayor Menino said. “I’m in favor of it and we have to work with the community of south Boston the next several months. It’s a good thing for tourism business to continue to grow.”

The panel hopes that this expansion will put Boston in the top five convention cities in the US.

It is currently ninth behind Las Vegas, New York and Chicago.
